That's a good pickup for Mercer. It gives you another FCS win.
The year before last, PC backed out of a game with WCU and we had pick up a DII game to replace them.

Would have preferred a home game, maybe they got future considerations for a return game. Should give them another game to prepare for Furman and the rest of SoCon.

Most likely PC is going to write us a check. I agree, they don't really want to play scholarship teams (for free) at this point, and I guess I don't blame them.

It is an interesting move. I am not sure I can remember a team picking up a game mid-season like this.
I suppose the draw here for Mercer is the possibility of landing another FCS win. I cannot imagine the money is the driving factor.
There is, I would think, some measure of risk. PC isn't very good, but has a few SoCon scalps on their belt over the years. There is also, I am sure, some level difficulty of changing schedules, preparation, etc. to play a road game when you thought you'd have a bye week.

You don’t agree that picking up a college football road game over the weekend and playing on Saturday week of has some challenges? It has some challenges, but really just mental ones. Mindset as far as thinking you were going to have a week without a game. I don't think routine changes at all. And the kids were going to practice anyway, now they are just in a regular game week. And, if what I've seen an learned about these kids so far, no one is lamenting getting a chance to play a game this weekend. These kids seem to really enjoy football.

I thought Mercer not forcing and picking up a D-II game just to have 12 was a good call in the off-season. At the same time, the opportunity got presented to most likely pickup another FCS-level win and Mercer jumped at it. Given what we saw with some teams and schedules last year due to storms, getting this game has a realistic chance of helping Mercer long-term. So I don't blame you guys for taking it.

Hello MU fans. On the concern PC is a road game as opposed to home, Mercer as a whole has really worked on the entire game day experience with the new pregame concert series, beer garden, etc. I'm sure lots and lots of planning has gone into that aspect of the Austin Peay game, which was set to be, and will be, the home opener. It would have been a huge gamble to shift all of that up a week to host PC. Also, if I remember correct, isn't there an NCAA limit on the number of home games (six) a school may have? I seem to recall Mercer had a waiver in year #1 as a restarting program, which is why we had seven home games. Mercer already has the six limit this year and couldn't host PC for that reason. At least I think that's what the NCAA rule requires/prohibits. If others have better insight or recollection, please share. Go Bears!

NDSU had 7 home games in 2018 for example. I did think about how much planning & effort has gone into building the excitement / experience for the home opener vs APSU this year & thought that might have played a part in preferring to play this one away. Knocking wood as I type, but the APSU game should be Mercer’s 1st real test this season. WCU has some athletes & an amazingly talented QB, but they really just aren’t a very good Football Team. I would have a hard time believing that PC can be very good either. The Blue Hose weren’t very good before they decided to transition to non-Scholarship football...and lost much of their scholarship-worthy talent to transferring...and have recruited the past 2 years without scholarships. We know Mercer was able to field an outstanding Team without benefit of Athletics Scholarships for 2 years, but there’s a difference in being on the way up & being on the way down. The Bears should be able to work on some things, tune up, tighten up, and leave Clinnon with a victory (knocks wood again). APSU is not the same APSU Mercer beat 3 straight from 14-16. They are much improved and I think they have a better Head Coach now than the one who left for a ‘big’ FBS job, who put them on a better footing in his 2 years there. I watched some of their game with NCCU and they have outstanding athletes that play an exciting brand of Football. Mercer Fams should pour into the stadium like they did in the 2013 Opener to watch this one! Then...in FUBeAR’s world, the 3-0 Bears will travel to Greenville to face the 3-0 #1 FCS ranked Furman Paladins coming off back-to-Back FBS upsets of GaSt & VaTech in a game that, in FUBeAR’s world, will decide the SoCon Champion & determine Playoff seeding. All Mercer’s Fans will want to head up to Greenville for that WAR! The Orange contingent in Paladin Stadium should rival the blue & white (toothless) throng that Formerly enveloped Furman’s campus when GaSou would visit for a critical game...if Mercer peeps really care about having a Football Team, instead of just thinking it’s a nice idea...y’know. But FIRST...BEAT THE HO’S!

I do lament a bit, though, that Georgia Southern was out of the SoCon before Mercer joined. Watching the Eagles play in Macon would have been great.
