Campbell is a full FCS Scholarship Team now, having departed The Pioneer League after the 2016 season. They are now a member of the Big South Conference & had the same number of pre-season All Conference selections (9) as did league defending champion, highly-ranked, Kennesaw.
The Camels are 2-1 having been smashed by FBS Troy, smashing D2 Shaw, and winning a last-second 2-point squeaker on a FG as time expired against former PFL (non-scholarship) foe, Davidson.
Their game against Mercer will be their 1st FCS Scholarship matchup of the 2019 season.
Here’s a quote from their fan message board about their win over Davidson...
”Very thankful for the WIN last night but I'm afraid we're going to have a really difficult time in the conference. We have no run Offense, We can't stop the run and our DB's are having a difficult time with pass coverage. I didn't see any DB turn toward the ball during coverage last night.
Let's not forget the penalties. Good Night, we nearly gave the game away.
Where's the Offense and Defense we had last year?”

Hard to know what to expect. Regardless of trying to predict outcomes, I'd really just like to see a high level of effort, better decisions in the passing game, and less gaps in the secondary. I'll consider that a successful weekend.

I really thought this was going to be the year the Bears made it to the playoffs. Can't stop anyone.

Hello Everyone. President Underwood and Athletic Director Cole should get off their thumbs; they need to fire Coach Lamb tonight! Don't wait, no BS about it. Coach Lamb started the program, got the team going, and was successful overall (including that record-setting first season), but repeated over and over and over subpar SoCon seasons are now enough. Even great coaches have to go at a certain point; he was a legend at Furman, yet they eventually let him go as well. This was put forward as a break out Mercer year. No more, at least if current trends continue.
Mercer has been embarrassed at home twice now by non-conference foes, both of which should have been solid home wins, if not easy wins. Overall, three straight losses after starting 2-0. Whatever happened to Riddle who was supposed to be a top-notch quarterback? Let Riley play, he was the conference freshman of the year two years ago for goodness sake.
The new defensive coordinator has obviously failed to build a defense, hundreds and hundreds of yards given up overall and especially on the ground.
Coach Lamb needs to go tonight, clean out the office. Make the OC the interim head coach and see what happens in conference play over the rest of the season. In the off-season, get a big name coach for next year who will MOTIVATE and DEMAND the guys to play up to their potential. Mercer is the only private D1 football program in Georgia, yet we can't win. How did Kennesaw State (public, got it) figure it out so fast? How did Furman (private) regroup so fast? Mercer has had good recruiting classes, but nothing improves. Something at the core is wrong, time for new management, or alumni, students, and friends who have loyally supported the program, and athletics in general, are apt to go away. This is the same as Coach Bob Hoffman and basketball. Coach Hoffman got the big win over Duke in the NCAA tournament, but failed afterwards, including the scandalous misconduct of the players.
Thank you to Coach Lamb for his service, but he needs to go NOW!!! Otherwise, it will be just more of the same. Mercer Leadership - change the status quo, shake it up, get a new leader who will inspire and demand better play on the University gridiron.

You don't fire a coach during the season.

But not tonight. I'm too irritable. Was a really bad loss at home. I don't leave games early ever. But I did tonight. Not good.

On a good note Tucker Cannon’s toe-tipping TD catch was #2 on ESPN’s top 10 plays of the week..gonna really miss Durden these next 6 weeks.

On to conference play.
Glad these tough out of conference games are over. Why make the schedule so tough to start the season? Schedule some teams we can beat, like we used to.

These were scheduled as games Mercer could win. It’s a weak OOC slate when you break it down. Presbyterian is a bottom dweller. Campbell is a brand new FCS scholarship team that struggled against Davidson? Austin Peay is a legit team, but we had them at home. So a perceived edge. A favorite in all 3 of those pregame. The Campbell loss is brutal.
