Watched WCU @ Chatt last night...
New Coaching Staff is big upgrade for them. They have designed their Team & are using their Players in ways to take best advantage of their assets & minimize their liabilities. This is no small thing!
Very impressed with their Offense. Of course, they were playing against WCU’s D, which continues to be something that would be an embarrassment to most GA HS Defenses. So, it’s hard to tell if they are as good as they looked or if WCU just makes any O look good. That said, they have a truly outstanding True FR RB that runs as hard as any RB in the SoCon. He is a smaller version of Mercer’s Devezin & does not expect to go down. He must be TACKLED to the ground or he’s gonna keep running. They are running simple, yet very effective schemes, including a nice Triple Option RPO - Inside Zone OR QB Run (Zone Read) OR short pass to TE in flat / WR 10-12 yd Out - very effective at stressing the D with a tough RB inside, a 240 QB (who doesn’t mind running the ball & putting his head down & barreling over DB’s), and a pass route combo that is within his skill set to hit. OL is effective & appears much better Coached (and a lot leaner / more athletic) than in years past. QB can also throw a very nice deep ball & they have a Durden-like WR (not as good as Durden, even though he has more accolades, but still VERY good) who gets open & catches the ball. They also ran a ton of Outside Zone & ran it well. They are thin at the RB spot though with 1 JUCO Transfer (their best RB last year) out with an ACL tear & their FCS Transfer, who was running very well on Sat., looking like he pulled/popped a hamstring on a 70 yd TD run on Sat.
Solid, if not spectacular on D. They did struggle at stopping WCU’s running game though, especially when Tyrie Adams entered the game mid to late 2nd quarter. 2 or 3 very good DLmen, 1 good LB...and the rest seemed to be “just guys” - WCU didn’t seem to test their DB’s very much, so it’s hard to say how good they are in coverage, but I don’t think they are great.
Placekicker seemed to struggle, but Punting seemed good...and, for some reason, they fair caught every KO, but did return punts fairly well, if I recall. WCU fair caught just about everything, I believe, so I don’t know how good they are in coverage.
This is a winnable game IF Mercer...
* Runs the ball like they did vs. Campbell in the 2nd half. I realize I may offend some Moms/Dads and/or Players (or even Coaches) with this comment, but I really like the OL shuffle/combo I saw in the 2nd half with Flath @ OT, Cohen in @ LG, Higgins at C. If Sanders is back this week, I could see Sanders LT, Cohen LG, Higgins C, Robinson RG, Flath RT being a VERY effective OL for Mercer. Robinson seemed to play better/harder when Higgins and/or Cohen were in the game, and Flath looked more comfortable/effective playing OT (than @ OG), which I don’t think he has played since HS.
* Doesn’t turn the ball over...sez Capt. Obvious
* Tests Chatt’s secondary & LB’s by targeting/hitting multiple Receivers, including the TE’s (as they have been doing). Wouldn’t mind seeing more of having Ellington & Rodriguez in the game at the same time - hard to cover both of those big cats. Thought Peterson was impressive on Sat. also ... and Graham...lots of weapons out there. Make Chatt defend ‘em all.
* Plays D like they did vs. WCU and the 1st 2.5 quarters vs. Campbell, but NOT at all like they did the last 1.5 quarters vs. Campbell nor @ Furman. Hopefully, Fleming will be back this week. If the D doesn’t TACKLE, really Tackle WELL, Chatt’s RB will run roughshod. They must ‘old-school’ tackle though - HIT Hard AND Wrap up. He absolutely will NOT go down on contact...must be wrapped up & brought to the ground!
* Solves whatever is causing the Punting game to perform at Middle School level or worse...or just don’t need to punt or don’t punt. WCU was 5 for 5 or so vs. Chatt on 4th downs...just sayin’...
