Mubear Dude you’re being a jerk. I thought we could respectfully discuss Mercer football here. I guess not. I’ll keep supporting the bears and hope For the best. I’ll check back here in few years when more than likely we are still irrelevant if you have your way. Hope not. I’m out.

By sports message board standards, this is an incredibly civil discussion. If you are offended by a little snark, maybe sports message board banter isn't for you.

I'm being a jerk? Why? Because I disagree with him?

Dude. I’m saying the system is better than what we’ve been doing. There are good and bad coaches trying every system. I know the flex gives us advantages that other systems do not. I didn’t expect this discussion to be so offensive. Time to tailgate. Glad we’ve finally got fall weather. Maybe so, maybe not. At its peak, the split veer (or however you term it) looks unstoppable - 3 or 4 yard chunks every play with an offense methodically moving down the field. However, once "off schedule" the offense has a difficult time picking up yards due to its weak passing attack. Defenses - particularly in the SoCon, which has had a long history playing against that offense - can scheme it. The Citadel is a hard nosed team, but even in the SoCon their offense is league average. They aren't even the top in the SoCon in rushing offense - running an offense that hardly ever throws the ball. So, it isn't a panacea. The other downside of the offense, as far as I can tell, is "buy in." It is a difficult offense to dabble in - you are either completely committed to it or not. One other concern that I've noticed is that some will consider it a program signaling they can't compete on the recruiting trail. That is, they run the offense because they can't get the same athletes as their competitiors. I do not necessarily believe that is true, but that can often be a stigma. That said, I love watching similar type offenses. Army is about my favorite team to watch play, and they run a more "modernized" version of the offense. Furman's offense, similarly, has elements of the offense, but incorporates a lot more passing. I can understand Mercer fan's frustration, of course. A piddling single-back spread offense can be a tough one to watch. I had to endure a number of years of Furman running that offense.

The Furman offense you/we endured can accurately be described as piddling (pathetically trivial) as it was at or near the bottom of SoCon stats almost every year. While, personally, I’m not a fan, at all, of the single-back spread offense either, characterizing Mercer’s O as piddling is certainly not accurate. Since the Bears rolled into this style of O in 2017, after the departure of QB, John Russ, they have most often been #3-#5 in the SoCon stats in scoring O & Total O. Nothing pathetically trivial about watching Devezin, Durden, Cannon, Riddle, Riley, et al, demonstrate their exceptional talents.

How bad is it for Lamb if the Bears lose to a team without a conference win this season?

How bad is it for Lamb if the Bears lose to a team without a conference win this season? If we're being fair, not that much worse than it already is.
ETSU lost to Wofford by 18, Furman by 7, Chatt by 3, Citadel by 4, and Austin Peay by 6. We have lost to Wofford by 34, Furman by 35, Chatt by 17, Citadel by 11, and Austin Peay by 14. So, to somehow suggest that we are even a favorite in this game, simply because of number of conference wins, would be (I think) misguided. In fact, Vegas has us as a 3 point dog. So....
