It’s a Tough Situation, but Jim Cole Optimistic as Mercer Plans for Football Season“We’re planning to play football unless somebody tells us otherwise,” Cole said in an interview with The Telegraph, who added those goals are in lockstep with the mission outlined by university president William Underwood.
Cole dedicates a large chunk of his time planning for an altered look inside Five Star Stadium, scheduled to begin Sept. 12 against Western Carolina. His focus remains on optimizing spaced-out seating arrangements for social distancing, exchange of money and tickets, and a safe concession setup based on guidelines set at the state and local levels.”

What happens if the SEC decides to go to an SEC only schedule? The loss of the Vandy payday on Mercer's program would be painful.

If the SoCon follows other FCS conferences, like the CAA, and cancels its football season, Vandy will not owe Mercer a penalty for cancelling the game. Or if the SoCon goes to a conference-only schedule, then no buyout.
If the SoCon or Mercer doesn't cancel the season, then Vandy will owe Mercer for cancelling. I have no idea how much, but Vandy would have owed Colorado State $500k except their conference went to a conference-only schedule. I can't imagine Mercer's buyout is as much as Colorado State. There could also be a force majeure clause that would cover this situation, in which case, no buyout for Mercer.

herosports.com/college-foot...fcs-teams-are-currently-in-for-a-fall-season/:"The NCAA announced today that each division will determine the status of fall championships. One of the guidelines states “if 50% or more of eligible teams in a particular sport in a division cancel their fall season, there will be no fall NCAA championship in that sport in that division.” Six of the 13 FCS conferences have already postponed their fall season, although the Ivy League does not participate in the playoffs. The MEAC and the SWAC send their champ to the Celebration Bowl, but the other teams in the conference are eligible for an at-large bid. With some teams ineligible due to infractions or currently in a transitioning process, there are roughly 113 teams eligible for the playoffs. Right now, 69 teams have not postponed their fall seasons. About 61% of teams eligible for the playoffs currently plan to play.

If only the SEC, Big XII, SunBelt, CUSA and SoCon play in the fall, we can expect to see a lot of SoCon games on TV.

Have they announced the So Con must play conference only? Or do you think there is a chance they could add another FBS school to replace Vandy? Weird Vandy is still on the website.

I haven't seen any announcement from the conference. If smart, they will not announce a conference-only schedule since that likely will mean no payout from Vandy for breaking the contract.

The Southern Conference canceled all fall conference sports competitions Thursday, according to a press release by Mercer University.
“It is the intention [of the Southern Conference] to move the fall sports’ regular-season competition and championships to the spring,” according to the press release. “Practice and competition for some sports that have their championships in the winter/spring but traditionally have fall practice will be determined by each institution.”

No fall championships for the NCAA -- www.espn.com/college-sports...a-championships-fall-due-coronavirus-pandemicNCAA president Mark Emmert said Thursday there won't be fall NCAA championships because there are not enough schools participating due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic -- a decision that affects 22 championships, including FCS football. "The board of governors also established if you don't have half of the schools playing a sport, you can't have a legitimate championship," Emmert said in a video posted on the NCAA's Twitter feed. "We can't in any Division I NCAA championship sport now -- which is everything other than FBS football that goes on in the fall. Sadly, tragically, that's going to be the case this fall, full stop."
