I am confused. I thought all sports have been cancelled for fall. From the 8/13 press release from Mercer Athletics, following the announcement that there will be no Southern Conference (sanctioned) competitions or Championships in the Fall... "Today's decision by the SoCon was not one that was taken lightly," remarked Director of Athletics Jim Cole. "Although disappointed by the move to the spring, I look forward to meeting with our student-athletes as soon as possible and charting a new path forward. The actions by the conference leave flexibility for a partial schedule this coming semester. I look forward to pursuing all options related to games in the fall."

No championship, no fans in the stands. What is the point of playing? Is it just for the money?

No championship, no fans in the stands. What is the point of playing? Is it just for the money? very deep philosophical question there. I think before one can answer that question in the ‘time of covid,’ one has to have a good handle on the truthful answers to a couple of other questions in ‘normal times.’ Namely... 1) What is the point of intercollegiate athletics, in general? 2) What is the point of intercollegiate college football, specifically? 3) What is the point of intercollegiate college football at specific levels (FBS-P5, FBS-G5, FCS, FCS-Non-Scholarship, D2, NAIA, D3)? 4) What is the point of intercollegiate college football at this school? 5) What is the point of intercollegiate college football at this school, this season; if we were in ‘normal times.’ Then, I think you’re ready to try to answer your question, “What is the point of Mercer Football playing intercollegiate college football this season; in this challenging environment. In FUBeAR’s opinion, for FCS P5 Football, you don’t really have to get all ooey-gooey, it’s ABOUT MONEY almost all the time. They can put a lot of flowery phrases around it...but, other than the relationship the Players form among themselves & with some of their position Coaches, it’s all about the KWAN! At the FCS Level, in general, and at Mercer, specifically, trying to play games this season, IMHO, has almost nothing to do with money. I can think of many, many other reasons why they are trying to play. One easy one - new staff, young team, no spring practice - they NEED to PLAY Football soon. I bet Coach Cronic would be happy to kick it off against a Pick-Up Team from Bibb County in a corn field at midnight just to get some game Reps in. There are many other reasons for them to play...I bet y’all can come up with at least 10, if you try.
