Abilene Christian (0-3) is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Southland Conference rival, Stephen F. Austin... Wildcats run for three touchdowns vs. SFA (Not a great headline)ARLINGTON, Texas – Only in this pandemic-colored season could a football game featuring the year’s lone matchup of Southland Conference rivals be played in a historic baseball stadium, yet turn into a track meet by the fourth quarter.
But such was the scene across the street from tonight’s Game 4 of the neutral-field World Series: a defensive battle that morphed into a wild shootout in which the contest’s final outcome appeared to change three times in the closing minutes. Trae Self threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, the last a game-winner in a 39-32 overtime victory Saturday afternoon over Abilene Christian University in the first college football game ever played at Globe Life Park.

So...Looks like ACU’s O was more effective against Army than Mercer’s was. We know a lot of ACU’s scoring was in ‘garbage time,’ so I think we can assume that a good bit of the Wildcats’ success on O occurred late as well. On the other hand, Mercer’s O was not able to produce in that same ‘garbage time,’ but Army was able to play keep-away in the 2nd half (TOP = 19:54), particularly in the 4th quarter (TOP = 10:48). Mercer only had 21 Offensive Plays in the 2nd half (8 in the 4th quarter) to Army’s 37 (18 in the 4th quarter)...which brings me to Defense. It would appear that Mercer’s D played better against Army than ACU’s did...with 1 VERY SIGNIFICANT exception...Army was 5 of 11 (45%) on maintaining possessions by converting on 3rd OR 4th Down vs. ACU. Against Mercer, Army maintained possessions by converting on 12 of 14 (86%) 3rd OR 4th Downs tries. It’s difficult against Army’s O, but the D HAS TO find a way to get off the field AND/OR create turnovers. Mercer was unable to do either of those things (0 turnovers / 2 ‘stops’). Army is perfectly happy if your D holds them to 2.5 yds/rush...as long as they are getting / converting 1st Downs. Interceptions thrown were obviously a KILLER for Mercer. You can’t afford to cede possessions and give up short fields against Army’s O. Ball security is Job 1. Must keep the D off the field & reduce Army’s TOP, while longer fields give them more opportunities to ‘get behind the chains’ on O...which is the best D against it. 3 (or 4, if you look at it that way) KEY STATS - in Mercer’s outcome with Army are in RED above

If Mercer doesn't wear orange on black on halloween, they need to go to time out.

The completely blown FG opportunity at the end of the first half. I mean, good grief. Difference in the score. Also, when you are tied and hold a team to a missed FG attempt with 4 minutes left in the game, you absolutely can't go 3 and out on the series after that.
Team played hard and I thought the defense really got after it. #3 Lance Wise seemed like he had about 30 tackles. But, they've got some tape now and can get to work. 3ish months away from conference games. Definitely got some stuff to clean up.

FUBear,
Thanks for dropping by Cat Chat and sharing information about Mercer as well as Macon. With an ambitious first year HC and an extremely young team I look forward to watching the Bears in action this spring.
