No need to consider polls & rankings this week as Mercer cannot, in FUBeAR’s opinion, lose another game and expect to make the playoffs.
A tie for the SoCon Championship would be possible with an additional loss, but, most likely, would not be a situation where Mercer would win the tiebreaker to get the SoCon Playoff AutoBid. And, at 7-3/6-2, Mercer does not get an At-Large bid, in FUBeAR’s opinion.
So, certainly the Coaches & Players must only focus on the weekly opponent, and, as fans, there really is no reason, at this point, for us to think (much) about anything else, either…
So…on to Wofford…
Wofford is the only SoCon Team that Mercer has not defeated since joining the SoCon in 2014. For that reason alone, this game is a must-win.
Wofford, once a smooth-running, tightly-wound machine of a College Football program, has been unraveling since their Head Coach of 30 years retired a few years ago & the Woffy Admin ignored his recommendation in the hiring of his replacement. That unraveling has seemed to be accelerating as time has passed and performance on the field has really started to reflect the troubled state of the overall Program. But…as fate would have it, stealing a page from the playbook Furman used to destroy them a week earlier, Woffy rolled the dice and went with an untested Freshman QB to start the 2nd half vs. Samford after getting pasted in the 1st half…and he nearly saved the day - Woffy had a chance to tie and go to OT, but missed a 41 yard FG.
So…unfortunately, the Terriers will be coming to Maconga with a renewed sense of confidence.
They will also look to their 1-score loss to VMI as more cause for confidence after Mercer’s ‘snakebit’ debacle against the same Keydets last week.
Mercer can absolutely blow Wofford off the field (they gave up 42 to Furman), but the Bears have a lot to correct in practice, on both sides of the ball this week. They will need a good plan to stop Woffy’s cadre of very good RB’s & the Bears will need a strong running game…because, apparently, by SoCon rule, Woffy DB’s cannot be called for DPI. They pretty much commit Felony Assault & Battery on intended Receivers every pass play and never get called - even waved one off Sat., as you will see in these highlights (below). I guess the Ref who called it (correctly) hadn’t gotten the memo from the League Office.
Here is this week’s Woffy’s Coaches show…plenty of highlights of their game with Samford…
