A few kinda random FUBeAR thoughts…in the event ETSU, somehow, wins over Mercer on Sat… Not good being behind Stephen F. Austin. They will beat Lamar on Sat. & get to 8-3. Also, not good being behind both UIW & Southeastern Louisiana. UIW will beat Houston Baptist on Saturday & get to 9-2 and they hold H2H over SELA, so even though SELA will probably beat Nichols Sat. to get to 9-2 and are ranked higher than UIW, they will snag at At-Large bid. As hard as it may be, we need to be BIG Kennesaw fans on Sat. If Monmouth wins, they will get AQ & KSU will get an At-Large. If KSU wins, Monmouth likely won’t, at 7-4. It would be very helpful if Bethune-Cookman would upset FAMU on Sat. in Tallahassee …doubtful. Need Elon to beat Rhode Island @ Elon - that one is possible. Wouldn’t hurt for JaxSt to beat EKU @ EKU - no way of knowing with JaxSt - could win or lose by 50. Western Illinois will not beat Northern Iowa on Sat…and don’t be surprised to see UNI @ 6-5 have their name called on Sunday.

Regardless of the outcome of the game on Saturday, all Mercer fans will want to watch the FCS Playoffs Selection Show on Sunday @ 12:30 PM on ESPNU. In the unlikely event that ETSU tops the Bears, there is some thinking that Mercer still may find themselves as one of the Last 4 Teams to receive an At-Large Playoff bid. And, if so, or if Mercer beats the Bucs, you’ll want to find out if Mercer U. was willing to guarantee enough $$$ to ‘buy’ a 1st round Playoff Home Game for us. Financial Bids/Guarantees are already submitted…so, hopefully, President Underwood & AD Cole were feeling generous when they put Mercer’s together. Then, if so, it will be the RESPONSIBILITY of Mercer’s Fans to PAY to attend (yes…even on Thanksgiving Weekend)!!!!
These guys suggesting you listen to them instead of the ESPN Announcers do know FCS Football much better than the TV guys (who will likely spend a lot of time plugging the Famous Mrs. Paul’s Fish Sticks Valvoline Bowl in beautiful Newark, NJ), so it may worth giving them a listen. They are a bit MVFC (NDSU), Big Sky (EWU), and CAA (JMU) biased, but when it comes to the FCS Playoffs, Teams from those Conferences will likely be more than half of the 24 Team field (yes…the polls, the computers, and the Committee are all biased also).

FUBeAR is down for that. 90-110 minutes to Macon or 15-20 minutes to Kennesaw to see a Bears 1st round Playoffs victory sure beats the 9 hours driving (up & back) FUBeAR is doing tomorrow to see Mercer win their 1st SoCon Football Championship!

This Bears should have been included. After such a close game that could have gone either way, to be left out leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

How exactly is the number 4/14 FCS Sagarin-rated conference a 1-bid league?

That was a royal screw job on Mercer.
No way should the MV get 6, Big Sky 5, and then the SoCon only get an AQ.
Missouri Valley Football Conference – 6
Big Sky Conference – 5
ASUN/WAC – 2
Colonial Athletic Association – 2
Southland – 2

Missouri Valley Football Conference – 6 Big Sky Conference – 5 ASUN/WAC – 2 Colonial Athletic Association – 2 Southland – 2 Yep… …and then to round out the field, you have SoCon - 1 Big South - 1 OVC - 1 Patriot - 1 SWAC - 1 NEC - 1 PFL - 1 1 of these things is not like the others… Only 1 of these “1-bid” leagues has a Team that beat an SEC Team, a 7th place Team that put up 52 on an SEC Team, a 3rd place Team that led an SEC in the 4th quarter before falling by 5, and a 2nd place Team that competed more than admirably against the FBS Defending National Champions. Also, neither do the 5 and 6 bid leagues. They have a couple of nice showings/wins against mostly G5 losing teams. Yep - the SoCon, from 1-7 (at least), can certainly acquit themselves well vs. the SEC, but just are not good enough to get the opportunity to compete with Davidson, Sacred Heart, and Holy Cross in the FCS Playoffs. Failure to and/or an inability to shuffle papers properly and 1 bad day are enough to eliminate a SoCon Team…while MVFC Teams get as many as 5 bad days…and Big Sky Teams get in because their Paper Shufflers are clearly the best in the business!

Not sure there’s much they can do. Dealing with a Closed Union Shop situation & the MVFC & BSC collude among & between themselves with scheduling to ensure it stays closed. They also run unified (among the Teams within their Conference) PR campaigns to influence polls & at their root, subjective strength of schedule “calculations.” Then they run a circular logic scam on outside committee members - I’m tall because he’s tall. Sure he’s taller than me, but I stood next to him once, so that makes me also tall. You see that now, don’t you?” Then they triple stack the playoff deck with byes, home games, and regional ‘gifts’ so that they’re “smart” selections are more likely than not “proven” on the field. Only thing the SoCon can do at this point, really, is add teams to allow flexi-scheduling in-conference & play the PR game better and in a more unified way OR take their ball & go home. FUBeAR is kinda favoring the latter. With the NCAA soon crumbling, the SoCon should come up with an Autonomous post-season play - maybe in conjunction with the Big South & the CAA or even with the Sun Belt. Let the 24 teams in the MVFC & the Big Sky take ALL the spots if they want to run a true closed shop…instead of the fake farce it is now.

Recorded and watched the selection show again last night
Chairman kept saying “record against the field” was the most important factor. More circular logic. How do you know the record against the field until you build the field ( lother than the AQ’s). If you build the field the right way, you can then justify adding more Teams from the Conf’s that you ‘salted’ the field with. And then spout this circular logic as the “Gold Standard.”
Mercer may have been the last Team out, but they never really stood a chance of getting an At-Large bid.
9 of 13 went to the Closed Shop Bloc. 1 had to go to FAMU SELA tied for the Southland title, but lost H2H to UIW…so they had to be in JMU is 10-1 and a near member of the Closed Shop SFA was the only Team that Mercer might have had a chance to edge out…but the Committee probably needed a Team in the West to even out the regionalized brackets.
