Big one this weekend in Five Star, as our schedule continues to gradually get more challenging. If you are but a casual follower of SoCon football, don't let anyone fool you into believing ETSU isn't dangerous because of their record so far this year. We need to lock in this Saturday and look like we did this past Saturday. Jacob Saylors, their RB1 is the leading rusher in the SoCon this year averaging a gawdy 6.0 ypc and has 9 rushing TDs. the QB1 Riddell isn't having the season this year he had last year, but he's also capable of having a day (if any of you recall his ridiculous 26-29 for 265 yards and 3 TDs in last years season finale against us).
We need this one and it will be a battle. It's also a chance for us to continue to stay in the national conversation with a big win against a good team.

Agree this is not a game to overlook. I would guess that players returning from last year might see this as somewhat of a revenge game.
They're a balanced team and could give us a scare as they did Chatt.
If we play up to our ability like the last few weeks I would expect something more like 35-20.

The LandLockedOceanMarauders made some changes last week. George Quarles didn’t go 7,986-12 as a HS Head Coach cuz he’s a dummy.
Playing 2 QB’s now - other guy is a 3-Star FBS Xfer who is a little bigger and perhaps a better runner.
Also - using a FB much more to give their GREAT RB, Saylors, another blocker at the point of attack.
This, as all but the 1st ETSU have been, will be a WAR!

Another SoCon Game of the Week for the Bears. After the Heartbreaking loss in JC last season in the de facto SoCon Championship Game, the Bears put a big Orange circle around this date on the calendar. Their animus toward the MountainMarauders increased when the Playoff Committee shafted them. Bottom line - someone has to pay and these Pirates are standing in the checkout line. We’ll see some new stuff from Coach Quarles and Saylors is gonna get his yards, but Mercer is clicking like a 16 cylinder Bugatti right now. They draw, quarter, and force these Bucs to walk the plank into the muddy Ocmulgee.
FINAL SCORE: Mercer 35 - ETSU 13

Special teams keeping ETSU in it. Offense and defense have looked solid otherwise.

WTF with the continued squib kicks?? It’s not like they have Deion back there. I see NO sense in this.

WTF with the continued squib kicks?? It’s not like they have Deion back there. I see NO sense in this. My instincts are it isn't because of the other team. I feel like Folser is either injured, or has the yips and can't kick it deep and keep it between the lines. It doesn't feel like there is any strategic reason to do this otherwise. But I have no idea.

I can confirm that Folser is 100% healthy. The squib kicks are a coaching decision.

Failed to account for the Special Teams yuckiness though…which ‘forced’ the Bears to have to score 20 additional points.

ETSU's AVERAGE starting field position was the FIFTY YARD LINE. Even if you think we can't cover deep kicks, I would have tried something different. You give a really good team the ball at midfield all day, you're gonna get your ass kicked.

ETSU's AVERAGE starting field position was the FIFTY YARD LINE. Even if you think we can't cover deep kicks, I would have tried something different. You give a really good team the ball at midfield all day, you're gonna get your ass kicked. Let’s put a little finer point on this though… 50 YL start on ALL possessions -41 YL start on ALL Kickoffs received -35 YL start on 9 of 10 Kickoffs received -35 YL is not great, but it’s not horrendously horrible either. The squib/pooch on an every time basis is a unique strategy, but it was effective vs. WCU (-25 YL start) and OK against ETSU 9 of 10 times. ETSU, like WCU, was a-bobblin’ several of those kicks, but reined them in just before Mercer defenders arrived to make (vs. WCU) or miss (vs. ETSU) the tackle. So, factor in the possibility of getting a turnover vs. the risk of yielding, say, 10 additional yards / Kickoff Return. That might be a good tradeoff. All that said, 3 things… 1) You gotta cover better - CANNOT miss tackles 2) Squib/Pooch has gotta be deeper - ball needs to get to -30 at least. -25 is better. 3) Maybe mix in a ‘traditional’ kickoff now and again…UNLESS - you know your Kicker cannot kick the ball high enough and deep enough that the Kickoff is, essentially, uncoverable and the risk of a BIG return is just too high. One more thing … maybe the whole purpose is to set up a few of these … Punt snap/get-off time & protection would actually be the bigger concern for FUBeAR if he was a Mercer Coach. Blocked Punts are ALWAYS VERY BAD. A squibbing/pooched Kickoff at least has a potential, and intended, upside. Hopefully the Bears fixed the Punt issue(s) during practice this week.
