Before Bobby brought football back Mercer was a basketball school for a few years. Average attendance over 2K/game. Yeah everyone talks about the Duke game but that was just one of many. The program was a victim of its own success. Instead of being happy with Hoffman someone thought we could be the next Davidson.
We weren’t, and this program is absolute crap now. How many transfers/portals now??? I’ve read Gary has one more year on his contract and the school doesn’t want to buy him out. No way we are going anywhere until he’s gone. What a shame.

It does appear that football is more important to Mercer administration and the fans. Mercer can be a FCS power, especially with many of the traditional FCS power schools moving to FBS. In general, NCAA basketball has changed for the worse. Mercer and other non P6 schools will be feeder programs. Those overlooked players who make a name for themselves at a SoCon school will enter the portal to move to a P6 program. As a fan of college basketball more so than football, this is sad to me, but there isn't a future in non-P6 basketball. But, yes, Gary has not performed up to expectations. Regardless of the changing landscape of college basketball, a SoCon championship every five years should be the expectation. The basketball Bears haven't been in that discussion under Gary.
