Visiting Division II, Clark Atlanta shot 47 percent from the field in both halves and used an 11-2 run early in the second half to pull away for good as the Panthers spoiled the season opener for the Mercer men's basketball team on Monday evening with a 71-64 triumph over the Bears.
It was the third-straight season-opening loss for the Bears (0-1) who mustered just a 53 percent clip from the free throw line, while also falling on the wrong end of the rebounding battle as well.
The triumph served as an exhibition victory for the Panthers who open up their regular season campaign on Friday at Valdosta State.

Morehead St had 26 turnovers, but the game never felt like we had a chance. Maybe late when Morehead kept coughing it up but we missed easy layups, or took bad shots, or just turned it back over. Becoming a staple of Coach Gary's teams. Tough to watch.
