In light of the pandemic and its potential destruction of many private colleges without huge endowments, the decision to not build the new dorm was a very good one. While I think Mercer will survive, many lesser private colleges will not unless the government bails them out. I do think Mercer will struggle going forward with depleted resources and smaller enrollment.

JMU is killing its students to fund their football program. Its student fees that go to fund athletics are $2300 per student.

At this point, I just hope there is a season next year.

I care more about basketball but by the time the team got things going this year, other things consumed my attention.
I am looking forward to next year.

Nice win over UNCW. That program is suffering from another bad coaching hire, but historically a good program.

Mike Anderson is in his first year at St. John's. They are picked to finish second to last in the Big East.
From a St. John's fan on Redmen.com. "Not going to be easy IMO they have I think 3 guys who are 6'10+ and have some meat on them. Going to be a tall task for Roberts who is our only guy with any decent height right now. They don't appear to be a particularly good 3 PT shooting team, and I'm sure they know we only have 1 sorta big man so I'm sure they will attack inside, but it would be nice to not see an opponent shoot 40%+ from 3 for once. If we are going to have any kind of decent season we are absolutely going to need to stop allowing every team seemingly to kill us from 3. This is not a season where we will blow through OOC. We will get several blowouts and lose against a few cupcakes I'm sure since we are rebuilding, but I just want to see our defense improve, chemistry improve, and I want to see real development."

2020 Update. Samford and UTC were reclassified from regional to national: National Universities147. Samford (new to National Classification) 153. Mercer (down 13) 227. UNCG (previously not ranked) ETSU – Not ranked UTC - Not ranked National Liberal Arts46.Furman (up 5) 72. VMI (up 9) 72. Wofford (no change) Regional Universities - South2. Citadel (up 1) due to Elon being reclassified 23. WCU (up 9) Not SoCon schoools, but MU's peers Belmont (166) and Elon (84) were reclassified as National Universities.
It appears that Mercer's drop can mostly be attributed to other schools joining the National Universities classification.

Often when a college hires a high school coach, there is a recruit in the mix too. Not sure that is the case with Coach Cardona but I have to think - pure speculation - that is very possible. A quick search didn't reveal any highly-rated players he is associated with. Not sure of the exact specifics, but I believe there is an NCAA rule preventing a Team from signing a Player that had a prior association with a member of that Team’s Staff for 2 years from the time they joined the Staff. So...maybe, look at the Soph’s from the school where he came from. I didn't not know that. Is that new? Good rule. EDIT: "didn't not" ? WTF?

Bobby Kummer is supposed to be a good recruiter. Hopefully that is true.
The lack of experience of this coaching staff should not be an issue. All have been around.

Kim Lewis is an old friend and teammate of CGG who has been at a good (not great lately) Richmond program that is used to recruiting smart kids to a selective school. He should be a good fit at Mercer. It usually helps a new coach to be surround by people he trusts.
