Looks like a small crowd as best I can tell on ESPN3. Especially the visitors side.

I'm OK with the Furman announcers being so pro Furman, but then they claim they are neutral 50-50. Ha. Even got a Furman First Down! Like you hear from the PA announcer.

Furman -VMI tied up 21 all early 4th. A couple TOs by VMI. A blocked punt that led to a Furman TD and an interception in VMI territory that Furman could not convert. Two good drives by each team for TDs.

Turn over on downs by VMI in Furman territory late 4th Q with Furman up 24-21. Should be able to run out clock.

Furman produces the broadcast. The play by play guy is a long time Furman radio broadcaster and the color commentator is a former Furman quarterback. They are decidedly pro Furman.

Looks like a small crowd as best I can tell on ESPN3. Especially the visitors side. We have a gigantic visitor's side (I think it sits 6-7k). Only Georgia Southern came close to filling it up. That is pretty typical. It'll be a bit more crowded if Wofford and the Citadel are in town.

And I'm OK with that. It is just that the announcers claimed and told us on the broadcast that they were "neutral , 50-50". It got even more pro Furman in the second half when they started saying "we" for Furman and they for VMI.

Back when Sports South did the games, I remember a Furman game at GSU that might as well have been a three hour PSA for how great Georgia Southern was. In the dark ages, you used to have to have your fanny in the seats to watch SoCon football unless it was the "game of the week" on Sports South. Mercer has entered at a time when virtually every game is accessible. So, even biased announcing is light years from where we were even just a few years ago in terms of access.

Then let's just let it be what it is. A home broadcast. Let's not pretend it is anything else.

The real question is, who is the real Furman Football team? Lots of questions still, but they won the game.

The real question is, who is the real Furman Football team? Lots of questions still, but they won the game. I always take the position that any conference win is a good win. Sometimes you have to win an ugly football game. Today was an ugly football game. I've watched enough SoCon games to know that you take the wins as you find them. I've seen us play better, seen us play worse. That said, Furman has been killing themselves with penalties. VMI played well, but Furman had something like 115 yards in penalties. That's really inexcusable this deep into the season. Our offense isn't good enough right now to be behind the chains over and over. You shouldn't win by three when you hold the football for 15 minutes more than your opponent. Defensively, another strong effort. VMI has a pretty potent offense and Furman pretty well shut them down. Hopefully our defense and kicking game keeps us in games while the new offensive system takes shape. At the end of the day, Furman came out flat and managed a victory. That helps. I do think that this is not your father's VMI team, though. They'll upset someone this season, I think.

VMI is a bunch better. And SoCon refs are brutal. So are OVC refs, for the record.

I thought the refs were pretty decent at the last home game (Coastal). This group was just bad. VMI is not an easy W, in my opinion. They gave a MAC team all they wanted. Struggled against Richmond, but the lopsided score was aided by two defensive touchdowns. Probably not as lopsided a game as the score indicated. They'll upset someone this season. Glad we moved past them with a W.

He was in Cobb's face a ton. Hit him often. And just generally made him uncomfortable. 21-42 for 200ish yards isn't a Cobb kinda game. That kids played hard.

Couple good DBs and a lot of athletic players that can really tackle. Luxury to have a players like Rider and Robinson that can allow Furman to send Magwood with pressure.
