That comment may be true or not, but I do know that a large contingent of Mercer's undergraduate, Macon-based student body shows up for the games, cheers like crazy from pre-game run-out on and stays until the final whistle, cheering like MANIACS all the while. So the Bears have that going for them, which is nice. I'm not sure there are many SoCon schools (where the student body doesn't carry rifles) that can make that claim...from what I've seen. Of course the Bears have only not visited FU yet. Maybe it's CRAZY-TOWN there for the student body. I have heard it used to be. Those are unrelated issues. I didn't say they were not energetic fans. I said that singular comment (i.e., why the team is no longer 10-2 despite moving to a much more difficult conference and schedule) indicates that they don't understand much about the landscape of FCS football. The Pioneer League is not the Southern Conference. Playing non-scholarship schools is not the same as playing scholarship schools. Your comment is unrelated to my unrelated comment about your comment.

It's more widespread than just the site and while I got the initial idea to go on a "tirade" about it from here it was mainly from the people that have talked about this since the Bears did not go 10-2 last year after that first year. Just felt it was something that needed to be address. He has done a tremendous job in his first 3 years and we couldn't ask for a better coach. It is controversial because more people believe that this is the case than I care to admit lol. That comment suggests many in Mercer's student body understand very little about FCS football. I believe we are talking about a tiny minority.

That comment suggests many in Mercer's student body understand very little about FCS football. I believe we are talking about a tiny minority. It is not terribly surprising, frankly. You start a program and play at a level most fans that grew up in SEC country are only vaguely familiar with. It does not shock me that the average student at Mercer (or really anywhere) may not know the difference between Butler and Furman on the football field. That said, one should still know not to use year 1 of Mercer football as the gold standard of where Mercer football should be.

By my calculations, Mercer is 3.28 ppg away from having achieved/achieving that "gold standard" in 2014 and 2015YTD...so about a FG/game shy of duplicating Year 1 while playing a full SoCon schedule in YR2 and a full SoCon and all D1 schedule in YR3. So, you are saying that FU is about a FG better than the non-scholarship PFL's Butler. OK. I know FU's PK has made 2 last second, game-winning FG's this season, so I can buy that.

Direct quote from a student yesterday "if he can't get it done and win next year they need to fire him," Thankfully you used your superior intelligence and persuasive powers to convince him otherwise and today there is one less person in that tiny minority.

He said he would listen to the podcast and see what he thought after hearing all my points. Hopefully, he will wise up. People just don't get how far along this team is.
