Thinking about the subject of rivalry, I took a few minutes this morning to summarize just a few of the thoughts that FU Football fans on the TheUFFP have posted about Mercer Football over the past 2 years. See below...
* Mercer is bad, period. This is going to be very evident as the season progresses, to the extent it isn't already. They are a glorified NAIA squad that moved to the SoCon years before they were ready. They are lacking talent at numerous positions, experience at almost every position, and are undisciplined, which we already knew to expect since Lamb is their head coach. Even a mediocre FCS team should easily wipe them off the field.
* Once they are getting destroyed in the SoCon for a couple of seasons I am sure they will have plenty of seats open in that miniature stadium
* Bush league. Someone forgot to tell them that they are stepping it up from the Rienhardts, Berrys, Wagners, and Carnegie Mellons of the world
* pretty unimpressed...our guys haze the snot out of these pledges
* Whether they become and continue to be relevant on the field remains to be seen
* I think we can all agree on one point: Mercer sucks
* Mercer isn't a big-time football school, and probably won't ever be
* Mercer blows!
* they should be at least two, maybe three, years away from fielding a team that should be competitive in the SOCON
* the best shot we've had for the doughnut in a looooooong time
* this is the easiest game
* the Paladins have two 100 yard rushers Saturday
* ample opportunities to play the subs, and holding the score down should be his biggest problem
* the only guys they may have that would be considered players on an SOCON level would be true freshmen
* They just don't have the players
* Fowler will keep the score respectable
* Mercer really has no defense
* their offense has only had success against extremely weak opposition
* the Paladins will take the Bears and tie them to the Whippin' Post
* FU is up by 30 in the 2nd quarter
* the game is so lopsided in Furman's favor
* Mercer has been bush league
* As far as the Mercer game...Shouldn't be a problem. Facts are facts. They are in their 2nd year of scholarship football.
* we beat Mercer so bad that FUBeAR takes the "e" out of his name
* Furman beat Mercer in Macon...Furman will beat them again this year
* Mercer? We statistically dominated them with our backup QB that subsequently got pulled. Just the return of Hannon, Thoni and Rider makes a huge difference
* we will be clear favorites against Mercer
* the 'easier' teams are at home...Mercer
* every SoCon team beats the crap out of them
* the only thing that should make it even close to entertaining for the first few years is that Bobby Lamb is on the opposing sideline
* they were playing with walk-ons against teams that were little more than glorified high school teams. And in the span of one year this program is being asked to play against scholarship laden teams. Going to take a few years for them to be competitive. If this game is even competitive, FU may consider taking football the way of men's golf, or at least the path of baseball
* A couple of their opponents would have been soundly trounced by a number of Georgia high schools
* Mercer is a team you shut the door early on
* Mercer will get out coached when they play Furman
* Mercer's football team has yet to even sniff competition of the caliber of the Furmans, Chatts, Samfords
* I, for one, can't wait for the good guys in Purple and White to show them how it's really done
* Mercer has beaten the sisters of the nunnery
* the wins were basically against decent high school level opposition
* Mercer racked up wins against what are essentially club teams
* There's really no excuse for any SoCon team to lose to them
* The average Mercer fan probably doesn't know the difference between Reinhardt and Furman
* Your program is not yet designed for SoCon success
* I think line depth on both sides of the ball are going to create serious problems for Mercer in league play
* Mercer's coverage on kickoffs, is poor at best
* Can't really say I saw much that impressed me about the Bears
* we need to hang 60 on that arrogant bunch. I've followed the Southern Conference for years and the attitude of this school, their administrators, coaches and fans makes me want to vomit
* Mercer is gonna have a long season
* once FCS fans saw free money being offered, the line [Furman -20.5] moved. Too bad the betting limits are so low for FCS games
* I'd be willing to bet 25 points allowed is Mercer's season-best mark in SoCon play
* Mercer's defense was the worst I've ever witnessed from an FCS team
* If I were Mercer, I'd be more concerned with the continuing traits of undisciplined play, game management, and the extreme backed off coverage that was displayed
* I'm glad Fowler is our coach and Lamb is our former coach
* a really bad team
* Sammy, UTC, Woffy and WCU to put beat downs on Mercer
* I watched parts of the Reinhardt-Mercer game and this is basically similar in terms of quality. Mid-level NAIA
* we are playing a D2/NAIA team
* a club football team
* Mercer is terrible on defense
* Mercer is one of the weakest teams in FCS
