Big week upcoming. Mercer may have been the last hope to stop the inevitable UTC regular season title, barring a pretty epic collapse from the Mocs.
ETSU, Furman, Mercer, and Wofford are effectively tied in the standings. By Saturday ETSU will have to play UTC and Mercer will play both Furman and Wofford. Standings may look much different after this weekend.

UTC is two placed outside the bubble. If they keep winning but lose in the SoCon championship game, will the SoCon receive an at-large bid?

I was proud of the effort. Mercer won the rebounding margin, and only turned the ball over 8 times. A lot of positives to build off of. I could easily see Mercer knocking off UTC in the SoCon tourney. Just like how Furman knocked us off last year (Mercer beat Furman twice in the regular season, and then lost in the tourney -- I can see the opposite of that happening). Go Bears!

This is not like a few years ago with Davidson in the conference when they were just heads and shoulders better than everyone else. Not many guys in this conference could do a whole lot with Steph Curry.

Not many guys in this conference could do a whole lot with Steph Curry. It's true. The majority of the pressure in the tournament will fall on UTC. They are expected to win it, yet they will face some serious competition. Take out the games with The Citadel. After that, their best point total was 94 points versus ETSU (in regulation!). That was still only a 10 point win. They aren't crushing people like their record would indicate. They average 72 points per SoCon game (without The Citadel scores in the mix). They also lost to Furman by 15. 4 of their 11 wins are by single digits. So out of their 12 SoCon games, 5 of them are either a loss or single digit win. Nearly 50%. I'd say that's a recipe for AT LEAST 1 close call in the tourney, and probably 2. It's gonna be a fun tourney!

Yes, the pressure is always on the 1st place team and yes, there is a lot of balance in the top half of the league. If any of the contenders has a great game, they can knock off another team. But, I would argue this...the last thing you want to do is play Chattanooga in a close game, they've won them all. The Mocs thrive on playing close games (they are veteran, they have multiple options that can score, they don't panic). They fell behind in the 2nd half to Georgia and came back and won by 2 in OT. They fell behind at Dayton in the 2nd half and came back to win by 2. ....and at Illinois (by 4), and at Mercer (OT by 6). All quality road wins, all close games. Mocs are 8-0 in games decided by less than 9. 14-3 decided by 10 or more. And honestly, many more of those games were closer games (under 10 points at the 4 minute mark) and the Mocs pulled away late when the other team was forced to foul. They aren't really built to blow teams out, it's not their style of play. The best chance of beating the Mocs is to jump on them early in the 2nd half. Their 3 losses have all come by double digits. 20 at Iowa State, 15 at Furman, 10 at UL Monroe (all those games were close at the half and the opponents had a hot start in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd). Statistically speaking, trying to hang around and keep it close at the end really isn't the best option.

I wasn't saying the Mocs were going to necessarily lose a close one, but that it was basically a guarantee that the Mocs would find themselves in 1 or 2 close calls in the tourney. You play with fire long enough, and maybe one of those goes the other way. You make a great point that the Mocs have won all of these close games.. that's not a fluke, they are a solid team throughout the roster. Mercer took the Mocs to OT at home, and they were within 2 points on the road with a minute or 2 left in the game. It's a matter of one basket here or there being the difference. In a single elimination tourney the rim might be unkind at a key moment and change everything. Congrats on the big road win in Macon, the only team to do it this year!
