So the seeding is not ideal with the #7 slot. Neither is losing 7 in a row. That alone does not properly tell the whole story though. First, Mercer opens against Citadel which it beat handily with the current lineup. Beyond that, there's ETSU who Mercer took to the wire just a few games ago. Not to mention that Mercer took #1 seed UTC to overtime (also with the current lineup). My last point of motivation... #10 Furman made it to the finals last year. Ok one more point... Mercer loves making history, so be the 1st team to win 4 consecutive games in the tourney.

So...I've been thinking about Mercer Hoops a little bit...and this tough run they're on...and I thought to myself...."Hmmmm....how would what the Bears have lost personnel-wise since 2/6 compare if other SoCon Teams lost similar personnel?" Did the best comparison I could; taking the leading scorer, the 2nd leading rebounder, and another Sr. Leader (guessing they are 'leaders' and tried to 'pull' a sometime starting/contributor off each Team); to get a 'fair' comparison.
Reckon how...
the Chatt Mocs would be without...Casey Jones, Tre' McLean, and Dee Oldham? the ETSU Bucs would be without...Ge' Lawn Guyn, A.J. Merriweather, and Deuce Bello? the FU Paladins would be without...Stephen Croone, Kris Acox, and Kendrec Ferrara? the Woffy Terriers would be without...Spencer Collins, Justin Gordon, and CJ Neumann? the WCU Catamounts would be without...Mike Brown, Justin Browning, and Rhett Harrelson? the UNCG Spartans would be without...Francis Alonso, Kayel Locke, and Asad Lamot? the VMI Keydets would be without...QJ Peterson, Phillip Anglade, and Tim Marshall? the Sammy Bulldogs would be without...Darius Jones-Gibson, Iman Johnson, and Marcus Johnson? the El Cid Bulldogs would be without...Derrick Henry, PJ Boutte, and Quinton Marshall?
BOLD = Post-Season Honoree
I don't follow Hoops close enough to know the answers, but I'm guessing each of those teams might have struggled mightily to win games as well if these 3 players on each team were not available for games & practice...Maybe some SoCon fans can give their honest assessments...
Also, during this 8 games stretch with 3 key players missing, the Avg point differential for Mercer has only been just over -4 ppg.
Certainly has been a tough, tough row to hoe for the HoopsBears this past 4 weeks.

Big win over Furman for the women. 65 - 50
I didn't see the game, but it would appear they are playing very well.

Now that Mercer is in the opening round of the Men's tournament, it got me thinking. Citadel and Mercer are both coming in on losing streaks. ETSU get the "benefit" of playing one of us tomorrow, while they get to rest. I honestly think ETSU would be better off playing one of us right now. With the opening round, ETSU is guaranteed to play a team coming off a win. A tournament win. Emotion will be high and either CIT or Mercer will have that winning taste in their mouth once again.
Mercer is a monster 10 point favorite in Vegas tonight.
and congrats to the Women's team making to the finals!!!! They await the winner of Samford/UTC for the championship. Amazing season for the ladies!

Amazing season for the ladies! If it offers any encouragement, Furman was able to parlay an opening round game against the Citadel last year into a deep tournament run. Granted, Furman wrapped up the regular season playing really well last year, while Mercer has been struggling. Some Furman fans are pretty convinced the opening round game last year was a benefit, not a burden. The team had been playing well, they handled the Citadel pretty easily, got a nice warm up, rested their players in the second half, and got them in a rhythm. I also personally think that Furman was too young last year to know what they were doing was pretty unprecedented. Obviously, Mercer needs a win to keep their season afloat. Ideally, you'd like to do so forcing the Citadel to play Mercer's half court game instead of Mercer playing the Citadels 40-minutes of hell.

Furman came inches from pulling off the tourney last year. Also, Stetson is in the A-Sun finals as the #7 seed. if they can do it, why not Mercer.

Furman/Wofford has turned into a pretty good little basketball rivalry. Last four games decided by a total of 10 points. Just my opinion, but I think Furman and Mercer are on the "easier" side of the bracket. I think Furman and Mercer both match up well against ETSU. Both of us get to avoid the #1 seed, a hot WCU team, and last year's champ.

The conference title is wide open, but there's no arguing that this side is easier. If anything, just being on the other side of UTC alone is enough to claim that. Like you also noted -- no one wants to play WCU at the moment.

Awesome win against The Citadel last night!! I love that we get a 3rd crack against ETSU. It completely reminds me of last year when we lost to Furman. Mercer beat Furman last year by two close margins, and on the 3rd try it was Furman that was able to win. I feel like that can be Mercer tonight... two close regular season losses to ETSU and now they can get over the hump! Go Bears!
