The Citadel at Mercer - Thursday, September 01, 2016 7:00 PM The Citadel -8½
Bellhops favored by 8.5 points...which is 4.25x the number of points by which they have edged out the Bears in the prior 2 meetings. I guess with The Citadel losing about 9 Starters, their Head Coach, their Defensive Coordinator, and having to replace their Offensive Coordinator; they are going to be over 4 times better than they were last year, since Mercer only lost 2 Starters and 0 Coaches. If I were a Luggage-Toter Fan, I would already have my reservations made for Frisco!

Mars Hill is a respectable D2 program. They played UTC within 10 last year. Shorter doesn't belong on any SoCon football schedule. Wouldn't surprise me if Shorter was a fill in game after a previously scheduled affair for UTC fell through.

Well Shorter and Mars Hill play in week 2. Massey has Shorter as the favorite. So if Shorter doesn't belong on any SoCon schedule, and if Shorter is better than Mars Hill, then........ Since UTC is a 10 point favorite over Samford, that would put UTC as a 38 point favorite over Mars Hill. UTC must have been sleep walking or hung over last year to let Mars Hill get that close.

Well, I'll apologize. I did not realize Shorter had moved to D2. I'm pretty firmly against SoCon teams playing NAIA or sub-D2 competition. Most of those games are not competitive, and do little to raise the national profile of the conference. If such games must be played, play one game against a D2 early in the season. If you schedule 2 such games, the AD should be flogged in the streets for insubordination.

Just chiming in as WCU has played Mars Hill multiple times over the years. We have done that for a couple of different reasons - 1 being the proximity (Mars Hill is just outside of Asheville) and the other being that we have played multiple FBS teams per season and had to plug a home game in to offset those somehow/some way. I think it hurt us badly last season, as one of our 7 wins came against Mars Hill and I can't imagine didn't factor in when playoff bids came out. For the record, we beat Mars Hill much more handily than UTC did, but I digress (since UTC beat us soundly for the second year in a row). Against FCS competition we were 6-2 (5-2 in SoCon), but we went 1-0 against D-II and 0-2 against Tennessee and Texas A&M so our resume must not have seemed good enough.
Playing non-scholarship schools like Stetson or Davidson doesn't "hurt" your perceived strength of schedule as much as playing a D-II school. I also think playing somebody like Austin Peay is brilliant - not typically a good football team, but for whatever reason they are not considered a "bad" win, either. Had WCU played any of those 3 schools last season instead of Mars Hill, we ***might*** have had a little more consideration for one of the last couple of playoff spots. In that regard, I think Mercer has done a good job of scheduling those teams. Our athletic department must be thinking this same way, as we play Davidson next season rather than a D-II. But with ETSU now officially back in the conference, everybody will have 8 conference games going forward. That typically only leaves 3 spots and most SoCon schools are going to play at least 1 "money" game. So everybody is probably going to try and find a Davidson, Stetson, Mars Hill, or similar.
And as I recall, Mercer caught some flack not for scheduling any of those teams individually but more for the fact that you scheduled several of them each season. For example, you played Reinhardt, Stetson, Ave Maria, Austin Peay, and Warner in 2014. But as a restarted football program, I really don't know how you could have been expected to schedule much differently until this season.

But as a restarted football program, I really don't know how you could have been expected to schedule much differently until this season. 1) WCU SHOULD have been in the FCS Playoffs last year, regardless of their schedule. The infatuation which the Committee has with the CAA is ridiculous. Also 6-5 Western Illinois only got in because they play in the MVFC. They looked bad in beating a PFL Team in Round 1, a team that only qualified for the Playoffs because JaxU was declared ineligible. If Jax hadn't have been disqualified, they would have beaten WIU by 2 TD's and the MVFC Fans (except for the NDSU variety) would have hidden their faces in shame until September 1st. Then, the Leathernecks were handily dismissed by another MVFC Team that also lost in their next game. SoCon should get 4 Teams in this year! Chatt taking the FCS runner-up to OT and Citadel beating everyone's 'darling' (now FBS) Coastal Carolina proved the strength of the SoCon and the Committee needs to recognize that this year! 2) Mercer has done a masterful job of scheduling their Football seasons from Day One. I don't give a rat's rear end what anyone else says, the way this Program has re-started, especially the scheduling, is the paragon that every start-up should follow.

Playing 2 FBS teams in one year doesn't seem smart to me, but Mercer is doing it next year. I'm hoping it is just an aberration. I have no idea, but perhaps Alabama would only agreed to give Mercer a 2021? game by agreeing to a 2017 game as well.

Well...if you win ALL of your conference games, you can play 3 FBS games/year, make the playoffs, and make BANK! So, I figure the Bears are planning on running the table in the SoCon in 2017, but wanted to give themselves a little bit of margin for error this year.

WCU has played 2 FBS teams most years (3 in one season a few years back). FUBeAR is absolutely right - the kids get up for these games, and as long as you don't get anybody hurt and you don't lose 100-0, the games don't typically hurt your standings with the FCS committee as long as you take care of business with your conference and FCS foes. We had a year where we played 2 FBS and 2 D-II schools and that was very problematic - meant we would have had to lose no more than 1 conference game and realistically we probably needed to go undefeated in the SoCon to get in the playoffs. But we have cashed a bunch of checks in the past 4 years and plan on doing so again for the foreseeable future (2 FBS games through at least the next 3 or 4 years).

I believe we will see Cam Jackson at QB for the Bellhops on 9/1. He played RB against Mercer 2 years ago, as El Cid had a 4 Year Starter at QB. Jackson had 142 yards in the 1st half of that game, but was knocked out with a hand injury in the 2nd quarter. He competed down to the wire with Allen in Fall camp for the QB spot, but I think they saw that Allen (an Air Force transfer) may have been a tad bit better with his arm & wanted to have both of them on the field at the same time, so Jackson stayed at RB. He also had over 100 yards against Mercer in 2015. AND, I did see him LEAVING the entire Gamecock secondary on a long run in their upset of South Carolina a couple of weeks later. So, shed no tears for Bellhop Football. You can BET that they'll be bringing a full stable of horses that can tote the rock when they hit the field in Maconga on 9/1! Just need to make them put the ball on the turf 9 times as they did in their 2 losses to Chuck South last season.
