Catamount 87 Why is it you feel they are catching my dogs at the perfect time?? Based on what I am hearing from the dogs camp I have a feeling you are wrong on the timing of playing he dogs... You probably say that since we have a new hc , oc and dc. And yes our starting QB is out as well. Bad news for the socon is in reality we only lost hc and dc. We have two pre season all Americans and some new guys who will play this week that will shock the socon and mercer with their speed and athleticism. This team could very well be the fastest in school history on both sides of the ball. If we win the turnover battle and have equal or less panalties our offense will be tough to stop. Our 2nd team slot back runs 4.4 40. With that being said you never know how a QB who has never taken a college snap will react to the environment . The Bears better hope he does not do what he has been doing on the practice fields this camp. As part of a peer reviewed scientific study, I find that teams perform better against the option with ample time to prepare. Defending the option is less about out-athleting teams, but making sure players are in the correct spot at the correct time. Mercer has Citadel and then Georgia Tech. It would stun me if they haven't been defending the option for much of fall practice. Coaches will tell you they prepare for one game at a time, but with two big opponents to kick off the year that run largely the same offense, I imagine they've been working on defending the option game for a while now.

True. And it probably doesn't hurt that it is the same defensive personnel that played Citadel for the past two years. And defended pretty well both times.

Plus, it's been a tight game the last two seasons, it's a home game for the Bears, the Dogs are without their starting QB and are breaking in some new coaches and schemes.

Almost - El Cid ROMPED in the 1st half of the 2014 game - the 1st time Mercer's players had faced a true triple option team. 20141Q - 174 yards rushing with 2 TD's 2Q - 110 yards rushing with 2 TD's 1st HALF - 284 yards rushing with 4 TD's 3Q - 83 yards rushing with 0 TD's / 0 Points 4Q - 117 yards rushing with 0 TD's / 0 Points 2nd HALF - 200 yards rushing with 0 TD's / 0 Points 20151Q - 52 yards rushing with 0 TD's / 0 Points 2Q - 83 yards rushing with 1 TD (excluding the single 83 yard run; a once-in-12-years-event for El Cid, apparently - 166 yards rushing with 2 TD's with that anomaly included) 1st HALF - 135 yards rushing with 1 TD (anomaly not included) 3Q - 86 yards rushing with 0 TD's / 0 Points 4Q - 67 yards rushing with 1 TD 2nd HALF - 153 yards rushing with 1 TD So...after that 1st half of the 1st game; especially the 1st Quarter...and except for an 83 yard run in 2015...Mercer has defended El Cid's Offense pretty well.

Those 83 yard touchdown runs are the ones that'll get ya.
From watching Furman defend the option for years, my general philosophy is thus: Limit the big plays. Option offenses thrive on popping off big runs. The ball changes hands a lot in their offense. The more times you force them to do that, the more likely it is they will cough it up. Even really good option teams struggle with fumbles.
After that, you have got to stay within striking distance. The option can grind the clock away. You don't want to be in a position where you have to score multiple times knowing you will give the ball back to an offense that can hold onto it for 10+ minutes.
It's an exercise in discipline.

Ifs would a and coulds are the beauty of our offense . Just ask USC how bad they would have beaten us if we didnt do x.
Also our players in 2014 may have been a 4-5 on a scale of 1-10.
We now have mostly 7-8 and a few 9 and 10s and that will be the difference . This game will boil down how a freshman QB plays . If he lays an egg and has more than 2 turnovers you will stand a chance . If he plays a solid game with 1 or less turnovers and completes more than 6 passes this game will not be close as the previous two.
Speed kills and you can't coach it or against it.

So prediction time:
While most think the battle will be between Citadel's TO offense and Mercer's defense, I think the key to the game will be Mercer's offense against Citadel's defense AND Special Teams. Mercer will give up 3 TDs but will score 4 TDS. So Mercer 28-21. Book ''em Dano.
Mercer wins the Turnover battle 4-2. And has a Special Teams TD

Here's the way the bellhops new HC, FR QB, and DE see things...(30 minute press conference) Interesting memory the Bell Captain has... "The first game at Mercer we kind of busted out pretty early on them and had a 21 or 28 point lead fairly early." Scoring Summary Qtr Time_____CIT MER 1st 13:04 CIT - 7 - 0 (CIT 7 Point Lead for 3:11) 1st 09:53 MER - 7 - 3 (CIT 4 Point Lead for 2:24) 1st 07:29 CIT - 14 - 3 (CIT 11 Point Lead for 5:42) 1st 01:47 MER - 14 - 10 (CIT 4 Point Lead for 5:52) 2nd 10:55 CIT - 21 10 (CIT 11 Point Lead for 10:12) 2nd 00:43 CIT - 28 - 10 (CIT 18 Point Lead for 0:43) ...So, their lead was never as much as 21 points, much less 28! They held a lead of more than a single score for 16:37 of the 1st Half; just over a half of the Half; which, conversely, of course, means Mercer was within a single score for almost half of the 1st Half. That's just not quite the way he characterized the flow of that game, now, is it? Not surprised. It's a well-known, frequently chuckled at Bellhop trait: grossly overstating their abilities and accomplishments. Another great example is their literature about last season. They always call Chattanooga the "Southern Conference Co-Champions," but never refer to themselves as anything less than "Southern Conference Champions." Heck, they sure wouldn't have that well-trumpeted SoCon CO-Championship if the Bears hadn't gift-wrapped it for them by taking down the Mocs. And you know what I say to them about that golden ticket the Bears punched for them... NOTE 1: "Code Red" means "Beat Chattanooga" in military verbiage. NOTE 2: "Pick up a weapon and stand a post" means "Beat the Defending SoCon Champions yourselves, instead of losing to them twice by a total of 28 points over the past 2 seasons."
