The true Freshmen this year are Mercer's 3rd scholarship recruiting class. If the Bears were still in the Pioneer non-scholarship football, they should be competing for a conference championship. By all reasonable accounts, a SoCon Championship "should be" out of reach this year against teams with 5 years of scholarship recruiting. However, I think the Bears still have a shot to be in the thick of it. In reality two things have followed BL his entire career: inability to manage timeouts and inability to consistently win BIG games. Say what you want but I think he has this year and next to win or MU will part ways. Underwood is not a loser. He expects to win. And before you all shout:"But we won against UTC last year!!" Yeah, we did, but we also lost way too many close games. In reality, the way Furman, Chatt and Samford look right now.... we may be lucky to win 6 games. Add to that, ETSU beat WCU. WCU beat Gardner Webb 44-14. Citadel beat Garner Webb 31-24 w/ a late touchdown. I know you can't use that bc anything can happen any given Saturday. However, I'm just saying it could be a longgggg year in the Den. See yall in Chattanooga. As someone who has followed Lamb's entire career, I don't think that would necessarily be a fair assessment. Lamb has won plenty of big games. You didn't ask me my opinion, but I will give it anyway. I would caution Mercer fans about expecting the results of 2014 and 2015 to be common place. It is really hard to win 8 or 9 games in the FCS. Even great teams struggle to do it.

We are receiving votes in this weeks FCS Top 25. For the former Mercer Football Program or for the new Go-Kart facility?

Two thoughts:
1) what has Furman done since BL left and how would you compare the direction of the 2 programs? I favor Mercer's position personally.
2) how in the hell did BL get a QB of Russ' caliber to help start a program with no schollys?
I'm frustrated with some close losses but overall think things have come along very nicely.

You might be surprised to know that Bruce Fowler (2013) and Bobby Lamb (2004) have the same number of SoCon titles as head coach. I don't have any question that folks on here would favor the direction of Mercer's program.

I can't remember exactly, but I don't think he had a ton of offers coming out of high school. Considering the way it could have gone at that position given the no scholarships situation, that's a mega home run from Coach Lamb and staff. I mean, crazy good signing. Because, I'll be honest, if someone told me we could trade with any other QB in the conference, I'm sticking with #7.

how in the hell did BL get a QB of Russ' caliber to help start a program with no schollys? John Russ is not tall enough, not fast enough, and doesn't have a big enough arm to play FCS Football. How is that not obvious to everyone? Same goes for Payton Usher. Sorry, with his size, he just cannot play FCS Football. Neither Avery White nor Kirby Southard are capable of playing FCS Football. They just don't have the length necessary to play OL in FCS Football today. Oops, almost forgot; Tunde Ayinla, Marvin Davis, Kelly Brooks - all too short to play DL in FCS Football. And Tyler Ward might be big enough, but he's just too slow to play LB in an FCS Program. NONE OF THEM ARE CAPABLE OF PLAYING FCS FOOTBALL! Wait...what? They're all starters and/or long-time key contributors on a very good FCS Football Team and they're playing ahead of taller, bigger, faster, much more heavily recruited Players? Seems College Football Coaches of today just may be forgetting to include 2 CRITICAL 'Measure-ables' in their assessments. 1) Ability to play Football 2) Heart = Mental Toughness + Physical Toughness + How bad do they NEED to win + How bad do they HATE to lose. Mercer Football, in 2012 and 2013, was the beneficiary of their competitors' negligent 'group-think.' The 8 young men mentioned above (and there are more on Mercer's Team) grade out OFF THE CHARTS in both of these categories. And those 2 measurables, in the right quantity, even in the absence of other, more easily quantified measurables, ARE, quite simply, ENOUGH!

I did wonder the other day how long Russ is going to hold virtually every offensive record for Mercer. It may be decades before someone starts knocking him out of the record book.

A lot of good opinions. Yes the program is young and it gets a pass for that...but for how long? Also, I believe the bigger question is have the kids under this staff improved? I like to hear responses on that.

I like to hear responses on that. The year is young. Citadel cracked the FCS top ten this week. GT doesn't count except for the $400,000 check we got. The Tennessee Tech game could have easily been a bigger margin as we were on their 10 yard line when we went into victory formation. And the TD gift from incompetent and/or high refs as well. Don't be such a Debby Downer.
