FU Teams of the early 80's would have whooped 'em ALL - past, present, and future! 2004 Furman Paladins. www.furmanpaladins.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2004-2005/teamcume.htmLook at those daggum numbers. 34.5 ppg, 454.9 ypg, 226.2 ypg rushing, AND 228.8 ypg passing. Oh, and the defense only surrendered 16.6 ppg. If you want to talk about a team that would whip your butt all kinds of different ways, that team is a good place to start. My apologies for Coach Spicoli's lack of political correctness, but you get his/my point. It WAS 1982, after all...when Men were MEN...and sheep were frightened...something like that.

So another data point: Of the 125 FCS football programs, Mercer is currently ranked #45 in the Massey FCS Composite rankings. www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare1aa.htmTo me this is pretty impressive based on 3 scholarship recruiting classes. This being said, I think there is room for improvement. But I'd like to hear other opinions. Did anyone think that we would be a top 25 team in year 4?

Another point view I finally have to bring to light, Mercer football will be just fine, for the talent pool will always be there. As a African American parent of a 2014 player from a metro Atlanta high school program my son give one condition to come Mercer or anywhere else was there must be significant minority STUDENTS on campus to give him a social identity. For African American players diversity matters period, Mercer has it and other SOCON schools still need work,(the data is there) one of his friends plays at Furman at it's different world for him. As a parent outside UGA or GT academically Mercer is a hands down is easy choice. BL will get the talent its up to him to make it work .I give one season when his 2014 class is seniors, and we should own the SOCON.

I know when I was an Admission Officer at Mercer, we were proud of the diverse makeup of our incoming classes and the overall university population. If memory serves, it was about 16% African American when I was working there 10 years ago. Just did a quick look up and the African American make up now is about 20%. Overall minority population is about 40%. Pretty strong.

Every school offers something different.

Actually, this may have been the best SoCon Team ever... ...lost to #5 ranked UNC in game 1. That UNC Team included Lawrence Taylor, Amos Lawrence, Kelvin Bryant, Rick Donnalley, Dave Drechsler, Steve Streater, Darrell Nicholson, Calvin Daniels, Ron Wooten, Paul Davis, Donnell Thompson et al (all NFL guys)...so, um, they were pretty good. Then reeled off 8 straight wins and had several bowl scouts in attendance on an awful, rainy, muddy day which ended in a 14-14 tie with NAIA (at the time) Wofford. Bowl Scouts couldn't get out of GreenVegas fast enough after that...Finished the season by trouncing the Bellhops and closed it out 9-1-1 - no playoffs, and, alas, no bowl game.
