Scouting report: Mercer buckles up for Auburn - Mercer comes to Jordan-Hare Stadium coming off heartbreaking loss to Wofford.
AUBURN, Ala. — Mercer (1-1) comes to Jordan-Hare Stadium on the heels of a 28-27 loss to Wofford, the No. 10 ranked FCS team.
The Bears jumped out to a 27-14 lead thanks to a 34-yard field goal with 8:15 to go in the game, but allowed a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Kaelan Riley threw interceptions on the team's final two possessions.
"There will be a lot of games that come down to the wire," Mercer coach Bobby Lamb said after the game. "We can go two ways…we can come in here tomorrow and buckle up our boots and go for the next one, or we can pout and keep losing games because of that. I think this team is resilient and that they'll come back tomorrow ready to work."
Notable numbers
4: Riley has thrown four interceptions in two games. Auburn’s lone interception this season came on a last second Hail Mary against Georgia Southern.

Quick hits
* Offensive player to watch: Avery Ward (Wide receiver) - Avery Ward, a 6-foot-2, 191-pound senior receiver, is on pace to shatter his career numbers. Ward is making up for lost time after missing the last five games of last season with a hand injury. He has 10 catches for 183 yards with a touchdown in two games. He had his fourth career 100-yard game last week against Wofford. Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele mentioned Mercer’s skill position players Saturday night as a group capable of “knocking the top off the coverage.” Ward is one of those players.
* Defensive player to watch: Isaiah Buehler (Defensive lineman. The redshirt junior is the most decorated defensive player on the roster. He made the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in 2015 and was the All-SoCon Second Team in 2016. He 14.5 tackles for loss in his career with six sacks. Auburn’s offensive line has struggled this season and the 6-foot-3, 262-pounder, who is a former teammate of Chandler Cox, will be a player to watch.
