Agreed. But what is there formula? Austin Peay (I know not in the Big South) spread it out and threw it around. KSU ran it all day long. The difference? Defensive side of the ball for Austin Peay shut Furman down. The announcer even stated that Furman would be in trouble if they got down, they were right. KSU also was able to limit the success of Wofford. Two completely different offenses but the same strategy on defense. Attacking, disciplined football. They were the more physical and nasty of the teams compared to our SOCON friends. The difference? Transfers and GPA requirements of those two schools are much different than ours at Mercer and other SOCON schools. Austin Peay is loaded with transfers from other schools and are Dawgs on the field. KSU requirements are slightly different and their program is based on football first. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. But there X’s and O’s Is not what is winning their games, but more of their Jimmy’s and Joe’s. Go back and open mindedly watch the Furman game. They shut that option down by destroying the line of scrimmage. Nasty up front, we are not nasty yet.

I’ll follow up with this too. We keep talking about the success of Ga Southern and schools with the Paul Johnson lineage, how do those coaches do when they get to the bigger conferences. What is Monken’s record at Army? Not overall, but at Army? When he was at Southern and they were FCS of course they had success. I was a student. It was known as the #1 party school in the nation, no mention of educational endeavors whatsoever. When GSU and App State left the Conference what happened? It’s national footprint went to ZERO. Those schools commitment to football is much different than ours. There are 6 FCS/FBS schools in Georgia. Not to mention successful D-2 schools as well. Our current culture does not attract those athletes to attend Mercer.
I’ll finish with this. We have some talented playmaking kids on this roster. We need a coach who hates to lose more than they like to win. He needs to be physical, accountable, and driven to bring our kids to the next level. KSU has been in existence for as long as we have and they compete. Austin Peay, it’s his first year and they took that program from doormat to President’s Suite by being physical, nasty, and refusing to accept the status quo. We need the same. I don’t care if it’s spread, option, power I, throw it 50 times or run it 100; we just need a winner. The guy at Valdosta State looks good too!

Your first part is so wrong I don’t know where to start. The success of Monken at Army? It has been phenomenal! He won 10 games 3 years in a row! He won 11 games last year for the first time in their history! This was a team that won 1 game before he got there. Not a great year this year, but no school or coach has s great year every year. They will build a statue of Monken at Army if he stays there. We are FCS why are we worried about it translating to the next level, although it clearly does. Did you see Navy beat Houston last night? Ga Southern hasn’t run Paul Johnson’s offense since Monken left for Army. By the way App State is currently ranked in top 25 . And The University of Ga has been ranked as the number one party school in the nation for many years. There are parties at every school. You can go to Ga Southern and get a great education I know my daughter attended and graduated from there. Could we recruit like GaSouthern and App and UGa no, but all the more reason to run the flex offense of PJ. Will other offenses work sure but I personally believe the flex gives us best chance. Look at what Kennesaw is doing as Mt DeSales points out.

I just feel it fits our situation best. I want to build a beast and keep our coach as long as possible.

I'm really surprised to see offensive style as the primary concern about selecting a coach.
Offensive style isn't going to matter if you can't select the right coach or get good assistants on board.

I'd be more interested in that LB that was the PFL Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Curious - any insight on whether Mercer's assistant coaches are still out on the recruiting trail?
I had not really contemplated it before, but I can imagine the new early signing period can complicate things for teams without a coach.

Look at what Kennesaw is doing as Mt DeSales points out. Sorry for the delayed response. Been a little busy. My first part is actually very correct. Monken has only had 2- 10 win seasons and his record there is 35-28. I’m not saying he’s not a good coach, but he is not the second coming either. My argument, which apparently was missed, is that his talent level there is stagnant. Not his fault, those young men are enrolled in the academy for much greater reasons than football. He will flirt around the 7 or 8 wins a year deal for his career and at Army that is great! They go bowling and then their season is over. What do we want at Mercer? 7 or 8 wins, maybe a SOCO championship and then maybe the playoffs if we’re lucky? My arguments about Southern and App State (who runs the spread) is that they had the athletes to choose from back when they were in the SoCon. GSU got the hand me downs from UGA and Tech because they were “too small”. They still get those same athletes plus we are in the mix with Georgia state and KSU. I get it, you love the option; but if we don’t have the skill set to run it it is not going to matter either way.

Jackal, I could be wrong but I think the staff, for the most part, is gone too. We are going in to the season way behind the eight ball. I hope we get our man sooner than later, if not it will hurt us during the second cycle as well. This has been my fear all along with the timing. It is so much more now than just getting a new coach. Our 2 coordinators were on 1 year contracts as well. So we are a tail wagging a dog right now.

I have no knowledge as to what Mercer has done / is doing, but I cannot imagine that Mercer’s AD would be so short-sighted as to not keep at least 1 Asst Coach, most obvious choice would be 1 (or both) of the Co-Recruiting Coordinators (Coach Barfield and/or Coach Harris), on the payroll through at least the early signing day, and with a retention bonus. I mean, I could see the Bears not ‘allowing’ any early signees if a new Head Coach is not named prior, but ‘holding the commits together’ (until they are evaluated /re-offered by the the new Head Coach / Staff) and having a knowledgeable point of contact for them & other Recruits would seem to be essential. Failure to do so would, I think, be an egregious dereliction of duties.
