Did anyone else notice Tyray Devezin entered his name in the transfer portal? That’s a shocker to me, especially since the new coach will have a run-first offense. Not a talent we need to lose IMO. Do you know why he wants to transfer? And how do you access the portal?

Did anyone else notice Tyray Devezin entered his name in the transfer portal? If they didn’t, they will after you have finished making multiple postings about it on every site on the internet. CALL CNN! Standard contract negotiation ploy in this day of collegiate free agency. 5 extra post-lift smoothies/week & an across the board upgrade in road game swag and #34 re-ups with the Bears. Do you know why he wants to transfer? And how do you access the portal? I think you will see some number of kids transfer out of the program. That possibility always exists with a coaching change. It particularly exists when there's a coach brining in a new system. Furman went through the same thing when Hendrix arrived as a number of key players transferred out of the program either in year 1 or year 2 (including several starters). Devezin likely will not be the only one. I don't know Devezin's thinking, but I would postulate it has to do with the change in offensive system. Mercer is going to move from a single-back spread passing attack to a double wing run based attack. Even though they are moving to a more run-oriented look, I think you will find there are fewer touches for any single player. I noted this on AGS, but Devezin averaged over 20 touches per game in 2019 (running and receiving). Lenoir Rhyne's FB averaged about 11 and was very rarely used as a receiving option.

Six signees. This feels like fraternity rush when there are only so many to go around. Quality, not quantity, right? I know, I know, new coach and all. I am just thinking back to last fall when my daughter, as a Mercer freshman in a stadium with about 3000 fans told me “dad, as much as you want it to be, football’s not a thing here.” Spears to my heart.

This year is going to be different. And remember, there is another signing day in a couple of months. Also, there are still transfer possibilities, which may or may not be explored. Also, as far as the students go, it's going to take time. Tradition takes time. Consistently winning will help. Mercer continuing to make headway in the local community will help. The continuing commitment to an amazing gameday environment will help. There is still a significant season ticket holder base, which is good. Fundraising continues to increase. Brian Gerrity is killing it for the Mercer Athletic Foundation. All arrows are still pointing up. I personally thought there would always be a potential lull after how rabid it was the first couple of years. It will be hard to match that excitement no matter what is done, but I'm confident things will rebound. Hard to get inspired with a bunch of 5-6 seasons. And for those that give it up, or don't participate, it's there loss. I've been to most all the SoCon schools for away games. Our experience is awesome.

Look, I’ve been to almost every game for the past four years. First year as a parent of a recruit and the last two as a parent of a player. I see change. This area wants to have a football team. Mercer has what 3500 students? You’ll see about 2000-2500 of those at a game, that’s about right. Trust me, not all students go to games even at the higher levels. When the change was made, a lot of decisions had to be made. My son said he wanted to be a part of a change, he wanted to help grow a program. He could have transferred, sat out a year, and then played. But he believes great things are coming, and they are. Winning will put butts in the seats. Several of my friends who have graduated from other schools have been to watch us play. They love our environment and have been back on more than one occasion. When we become more persistent at winning, we will see the change. It’s coming.

I have seen a fundamental shift in college football, though, especially at the FCS level. Attendance is down just about everywhere, so I'm not sure it is just a "win more and they will come" scenario. What Mercer is seeing is a continuation of a trend that is felt throughout most of the sport, they just happened to get in the game while it was happening. I don't think there's a simple answer to the question.

You can ignore the trend, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
There are a lot of theories to explain the declining attendance in college football stadiums. Winning helps, but it isn't a panacea.
