Just did a quick round of Twitter research and it appears that most of the players who committed to Mercer while Coach Lamb was still with us (other than Kevin Booker, who followed through on his commitment) has now publicly committed to other schools including North Alabama, Valdosta State, Savannah State, The remaining uncommitted player is Davon Wells, who doesn’t appear to have tweeted a decision, but is still tweeting about received offers.

Much of who Coach C has signed appears to be who he recruited for LR. I guess he is confident D2 talent can play in FCS. He sure knows more about it than I do. Call me an optimist but the guy just wins. Apparently some fans have decided not to renew tix. Good riddance. I just moved down to row H on the 45 in a block of 15 seats with 2 other families. And we have kids at the school. I’m gonna have a blast this year as long as I can find a designated driver.

Also, some pretty stellar committed transfers from Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina, App State I think it is reasonable to expect Coach Cronic to have to cast a wide net in year 1. He was hired right before the early signing period and brings a primarily new coaching staff. It does look like Mercer retained one of their co-recruiting coordinators under Coach Lamb, La'Donte Harris. That probably helps ease the transition and recruiting a bit because he probably had a good bit of legwork done on kids that are now committing to Mercer.

I think we missed this one, making it a 2-fer for the Bears from GHSA 7-A powerhouse, North Gwinnett. Outstanding DB, whose older brother, Tyler, had a breakout true FR season as the leading rusher for the Iowa Hawkeyes of the B1G in 2019. Taylor was the DB of the Year in Gwinnett County, an SEC & ACC Recruiting “hotbed.” Article on the Bears’ Double-Dipping Coup! Mercer lands pair of recruits from North Gwinnett, Devin Crosby and Taylor Goodson

Hard to find anything not to like (A LOT) about this one. Size, great frame, length, agility, looks like he has a great motor, goes sideline-to-sideline, and likes to ‘fight.’ I also saw some ‘next level’ pass rush moves in his highlight vid. Young man has rec’d some Coaching & taken to it. FUBeAR projects we will see Mr. Correa playing early & barring injury or any other type of derailment, will have an outstanding SoCon career with the Bears...maybe even beyond. Other offers from Navy, Tennessee State, UT-Martin, perhaps from FIU. Xavier Correa - Sr. Season Highlights

Welp...here’s another one that’s quite impressive...How many 220# RB’s were State Champion Wrestlers AND led the State in Kickoff Return Average (49.7 / 3 TD’s out of only 7 Returns)? I recognize I’m teetering on blasphemy here in Georgia, but that’s Herschel Walker kind of ‘stuff.’
Other offers from UAB, Louisiana Monroe, APSU, UT-Martin, Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee State, Western Illinois, Tennessee Tech
BTW - If he’s wrestling at 220, most likely he had to cut weight to get there. With his frame, he could be a 245/250# RB once he stops wrestling.
Here’s what 250# RB’s from TN do in the SoCon...
...and then they play 10 years in the NFL
BTW2...the 2nd guy, the one that 250# RB from TN ranned slap over. He only played 6 years in the NFL.

Not necessarily true. It varies by state, but weight classes have a lot more flexibility in the upper weights. If anything like Georgia, there will be a class around 190, then 220, then 285 (heavyweight). Wooten is listed between 206-210 from several recruiting services. Because he wrestles 220 doesn't mean he is 220. Odds are to wrestle 220 he probably doesn't intentionally drop any weight at all. Now, does that mean he won't play at 245/250? I don't know. That's up to Mercer's coaches. Certainly seems like he'd be a target for Cronic's fullback position. Jerome Felton is a tough comp, IMO, because he was already in the 240 range when he arrived at Furman. Wooten looks like a good pick up for Mercer. I think a lot of wrestlers. For my money, they are the best overall athletes of any sport bar none. Wrestling is a great skill for football players - especially for the bigger guys - because so much relies on footwork, strength, positioning and leverage.

If he weighed 206 ‘normally,’ don’t you think he would cut 11 lbs to wrestle in that 195 class vs. wrestling guys 14 pounds heavier than him...guys who probably cut 15-20 lbs to get down to the 220 class vs. wrestling @ the 285 class. That’s what happened in my HS Wrestling days. So...yeah, if he ‘normally’ weighs 220, 25 lbs to cut to get to 195 would be a lot...So, “not necessarily true” is correct, but my money says he’s playing @ > 230 for Mercer next year.

States have implemented a lot of rules regulating wrestling that didn't exist when either you or I was involved in the sport. Weight loss is far more heavily regulated. Wooten doesn't look like he carries much body fat, so there probably isn't much to cut. Besides, some of the best matches I've seen are 220 lbs wrestlers against the upper end of the heavyweight class. A strong, quick, athletic 220 can wear out some much bigger heavyweights. He will likely play at whatever weight gives him a physical advantage without sacrificing speed or agility.
